Google offered a new feature about a week ago, where you can add your own wallpaper to the homepage. In order to promote this feature and make it better known, Google is now posting a background image on the home page for 24 hours. You can read more about the art of a home page on the Google blog.

Google grew up with simplicity. That made them better than the cluttered homepages at that time. Do you remember Alta Vista or Exite or the old Yahoo? Google came along with the no-design design. Just plain usefulness. No wonder that as soon as the background image was posted, people wanted to find out how to remove the wallpaper.

The playful logo variations are an invention of Google. You might like it or not, but it is Google’s idea. Imagine if Bing would start to change their logo every special day. You would laugh about it. Yahoo tried to fake the Google logo thing. But it was a cheap imitation and they quickly gave up on it after a few weeks.

Anyhow, not everybody likes the background image and tries to remove it.
