Sweetest Day 2010
|
The third Saturday in October, which in 2010 is October 16, is the Sweetest Day. It is mainly observed in the Great Lakes region, and parts of the Northeast United States. It is considered as a made up Holiday by the candy industry in an effort to increase sales of sweets and chocolate. Others take it as an opportunity to be kind to others and to give love to friends and relatives, similar to Valentines Day in February. There were several attempts of the candy industry to make the Sweetest Day official, but so far these efforts failed. People who believe in the Sweetest Day celebrate it by buying candy for their wife and kids. While it is much smaller then Valentine’s Day, it is actively celebrated in Northeastern parts of the U.S., despite the fact that it is often referred to as a “Hallmark holiday.” Holidays that are usually referred to as “Hallmark Holidays” include Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day, Grandparent’s Day, Sweetest Day, Boss’s Day, Secretary’s Day and Fathers’ Day. On the other hand, there is probably not one holiday that is not being used by companies so sell more of their stuff. So, if you need an excuse to buy some chocolate or put some sugar in your coffee: go ahead, today is your day. But it is also completely fine if you are more in line with Rhett Butler, in his last words to Scarlett O’Hara: “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn” (A line from the 1939 film Gone with the Wind starring Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh). At least, now you know what this Sweetest Day thing is all about. So, go ahead and buy some candy for your sweet hart. There is no danger today – you can always say it only because today is Sweetest Day. |
